About Us
Torvik Martial Arts is built on a foundation of character, discipline, excellence, and community—a journey that began with a simple Taekwondo class and evolved into a lifelong pursuit of excellence. What started as a family’s discovery of martial arts has grown into a thriving school, shaped by dedication, resilience, and a deep commitment to fostering strength in every student. Led by Master Ginger and operated by Master Derrick, Torvik Martial Arts continues to instill the principles that have guided them from the beginning: respect, hard work, and the belief that every individual has the potential to achieve greatness.
Our Story
Torvik Martial Arts is owned by Master Ginger and operated by Master Derrick. The story began in 2003 when Master Ginger, with no prior martial arts experience, took six of her seven children to a small Taekwondo class at a homeschool co-op in San Antonio, TX. They instantly connected with the discipline and challenge of the art, each dedicating themselves to the journey toward earning a black belt—a process requiring three to four years of commitment.
Before even achieving her own black belt, Master Ginger began teaching Taekwondo at a homeschool co-op in La Vernia, TX, just minutes from the family’s hometown of Adkins. Master Derrick remembers assisting her in classes as a nine-year-old purple belt, an experience that deepened the family's passion for instruction and community-building. The turning point came when their longtime instructor moved to Oklahoma, and Master Ginger was asked to take over the very class that had shaped their early training. From there, their business grew steadily, expanding their reach to homeschool co-ops across the city.

Over time, the Torviks transformed their home into a true training ground, renovating an old rodeo barn into a dedicated dojang (training studio) where 20 to 30 students trained regularly. Today, Torvik Martial Arts teaches in eight homeschool co-ops, including two Great Hearts locations in San Antonio, and operates a large, modern dojang that opened its doors in August 2022. From their humble beginnings training in extreme temperatures with only fans and heaters, they now offer a spacious, air-conditioned facility that has welcomed hundreds of students, continuing the tradition of excellence, discipline, and community that has defined Torvik Martial Arts from the start.
